What is Pollack?
Pollack are hard-fighting predators commonly targeted from deeper rock, reef and kelp marks.

Pollack are hard-fighting predators commonly targeted from deeper rock, reef and kelp marks. Castwise uses species-specific scoring to help shore anglers decide when this target is realistic, where it fits, and what approach to use.

Look for broken rock, kelp beds, drop-offs, gullies and deeper water within casting range.
Castwise scores each mark for pollack using tide, season, time of day, wind, swell, pressure, ground, structure, depth, clarity and your logbook, then explains why the window looks strong or weak.
Pollachius pollachius
Single species
Deep water close to rock or kelp, with manageable flow and useful low-light periods.
A projecting lower jaw and a dark lateral line that arches over the pectoral fin.

Spring and autumn can be productive, with summer still possible on suitable rock marks. Local water temperature and baitfish movement matter.
Pollack often respond to moving water around rock and kelp, especially dawn and dusk rather than bright slack-water conditions.
Rock, kelp, reef edges and drop-offs are the classic shore context.
Soft plastics, shads, metals and shallow divers are common lure options. Ragworm, sandeel and fish strips can also take fish where bait fishing is practical.
Small pollack can be confused with coalfish. Check the jawline and lateral line, and log uncertain fish conservatively. This is planning guidance, not a legal or biological determination. Before retaining any fish, check the current rules for your nation and local inshore area; for English waters start with the MMO minimum conservation reference sizes and the relevant IFCA.
For pollack, Castwise prioritises access to depth, rock and kelp structure, water clarity, light and enough movement to activate the edge without making it unsafe.
That species-specific result is calculated separately for every mark and window; it is not copied from a generic fishability score. Your logged catches and blanks can then add private evidence about which conditions work for you.
The best target can therefore change by mark and window. Detected safety concerns remain separate from species suitability, but their transparent penalties lower the ranked recommendation; high risk requires acknowledgement and critical risk is non-recommendable.
Illustrative setup: A deep kelp-lined rock edge during the last light of an ebb, with clear water, moderate flow and little swell on the fishing platform.
Castwise interpretation: Castwise may favour this over a shallow beach for pollack, but only while access, footing and sea state remain acceptable.
Species identity and habitat are checked against the Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN). Retention guidance is checked against the current UK MCRS table; local and national rules can be stricter or change during the year. Safety planning should also use the Met Office coast and sea forecast and RNLI angling safety advice. Sources reviewed 15 July 2026.
