Deeper piers, rock edges, harbour arms and open-coast marks with access to clean water are typical shore options.
Castwise scores each mark for mackerel using tide, season, time of day, wind, swell, pressure, ground, structure, depth, clarity and your logbook, then explains why the window looks strong or weak.

Summer into early autumn is the main shore season, with local runs varying year to year.
Moving water, clear water and baitfish presence matter. Dawn, dusk and tide changes can all produce short feeding windows.
Depth and access to open water matter more than bottom type, though headlands and deep rock often help.
Small metals, feathers, float-fished strip baits and light spinning gear are common. Avoid taking more than you need.
Mackerel are usually distinctive, but small scad or herring can confuse new anglers in poor light. This is planning guidance, not a legal or biological determination. Before retaining any fish, check the current rules for your nation and local inshore area; for English waters start with the MMO minimum conservation reference sizes and the relevant IFCA.
For mackerel, Castwise leans on warm-season presence, daylight, accessible depth, sea state and the likelihood that baitfish are pushed within shore range.
That species-specific result is calculated separately for every mark and window; it is not copied from a generic fishability score. Your logged catches and blanks can then add private evidence about which conditions work for you.
The best target can therefore change by mark and window. Detected safety concerns remain separate from species suitability, but their transparent penalties lower the ranked recommendation; high risk requires acknowledgement and critical risk is non-recommendable.
Illustrative setup: A summer headland with deep, clean water inside casting range, manageable wind and visible bait activity during early evening.
Castwise interpretation: Castwise treats this as a mobile, time-sensitive target rather than assuming every deep-water mark will hold mackerel all day.
Species identity and habitat are checked against the Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN). Retention guidance is checked against the current UK MCRS table; local and national rules can be stricter or change during the year. Safety planning should also use the Met Office coast and sea forecast and RNLI angling safety advice. Sources reviewed 15 July 2026.
