Cod can be targeted from rough ground, mixed beaches, piers, harbour arms and storm beaches where food is stirred up.
Castwise scores each mark for cod using tide, season, time of day, wind, swell, pressure, ground, structure, depth, clarity and your logbook, then explains why the window looks strong or weak.

Autumn and winter are the traditional shore season, though regional patterns differ around the UK.
A good run of tide, colour and food movement can matter more than calm, clear conditions.
Rough and mixed ground, kelp edges, storm beaches and deeper water within reach are typical contexts.
Lugworm, crab, squid, fish baits and cocktails are common, fished on pulley, clipped-down or rough-ground rigs as the mark demands.
Small codling can be confused with other gadoids. Check current size guidance before retaining anything. This is planning guidance, not a legal or biological determination. Before retaining any fish, check the current rules for your nation and local inshore area; for English waters start with the MMO minimum conservation reference sizes and the relevant IFCA.
For cod, Castwise raises the importance of colder-season timing, water colour, rough or mixed ground, depth and the wind–swell pattern that brings food within reach.
That species-specific result is calculated separately for every mark and window; it is not copied from a generic fishability score. Your logged catches and blanks can then add private evidence about which conditions work for you.
The best target can therefore change by mark and window. Detected safety concerns remain separate from species suitability, but their transparent penalties lower the ranked recommendation; high risk requires acknowledgement and critical risk is non-recommendable.
Illustrative setup: A cold-season mixed-ground beach after an onshore blow has added colour, with a steady run of tide and a sea state that still permits safe casting.
Castwise interpretation: Castwise can raise cod relative to clear-water summer targets without treating rough weather itself as automatically good.
Species identity and habitat are checked against the Marine Life Information Network (MarLIN). Retention guidance is checked against the current UK MCRS table; local and national rules can be stricter or change during the year. Safety planning should also use the Met Office coast and sea forecast and RNLI angling safety advice. Sources reviewed 15 July 2026.
